Builder Gel.
Gel builder, often referred to as "builder gel," is a thick, durable nail gel designed for creating strong nail extensions and overlays. Unlike regular gel polish, builder gel has a thicker consistency that makes it ideal for shaping and adding strength to natural nails. It can be used to build up the nail, extend its length, or provide a durable base layer that withstands everyday wear.
How it comes off, and how it flows
Builder gels split first by how they come off. A hard gel is filed down and rebalanced at the fill. A soak-off builder is removed rather than filed. Check the manufacturer's directions for which applies and how to take the product off before you book a client into a service you will later have to reverse.
Consistency is the other split. Thinner, self-leveling builders flow out on their own, which suits a thin overlay. Stiffer ones hold where you put them, which matters when you are placing an apex.
Clear or cover
The other decision is whether you want the product to disappear or to carry some of the color. Clear builders read as clear once cured, which leaves the color work to the gel polish that goes over them. Cover shades carry tint rather than reading clear, which is worth weighing against a French or a natural-looking set.
What goes around it
A builder is one link in a chain, not a standalone product. Prep the plate with a gel primer or bonder, cure with an LED lamp the manufacturer lists as compatible, and seal with a gel top coat. For length, builder gel is worked over forms or over nail tips; applied thin, the same product can be used as a reinforcing overlay on a natural nail. Cure time and layer thickness differ by product, so read the directions for the one you pick.
