Standard base or rubber base
Two different products sit under one heading here. A standard base is the bonding layer that goes under color. A rubber or flex base is sold as a distinct product from that standard base. Which one a line expects is set by the maker, so read the brand's own instructions rather than carrying a habit across from another house. When the question is structure rather than adhesion, builder gel is the list to check.
Keep the three layers in one system
Base, color and top coat are designed as a set. DND numbers its pairs, and CND builds Shellac around its own base. Before mixing a base from one house with a top from another, check that brand's own instructions. The combos in this collection exist for that reason: a base sold with the top it was made for, including the no-cleanse and no-wipe pairings. When you are diagnosing a wear problem, confirm the three layers belong together before you change technique. Gel top coats is the list for the other end of the pair.
What goes on before the base
No base coat replaces prep. Dehydrators, gel bonders and gel primers treat the surface before the first gel layer, and brands differ on which of those steps their base expects, so read the instructions that came with the product. Refill sizes is the neighboring list to check when you go through a base quickly.
